    POSITION: Early Head Start Assistant Teacher

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Assistant Teacher will assist in planning and implementing learning experiences that advance the intellectual and physical development of children six weeks to three years old, including improving the readiness of children for school by developing their literacy, their understanding and use of language, their understanding and use of increasingly complex and varied vocabulary, their appreciation of books, their problem solving abilities, their fine and gross motor skills and their approaches to learning; To maintain the health and safety of children. To provide active supervision of children at all times. The Assistant Teacher will assist in establishing and maintaining a safe, healthy learning environment; support the social and emotional development of children; encourage the involvement of the families of the children in the Early Head Start program and support the development of relationships between children and their families.

    QUALIFICATIONS: •
    • Hold at minimum a High School Diploma with a willingness to pursue a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential in Infants/Toddlers
    • Supervised classroom experience with infants/toddlers or young children preferred
    • Knowledge of Early Childhood Development principles
    • Classroom management/supervision skills.
    • Willingness/ability to work as a team member.
    • Willingness to continue professional education and training
    • Good organizational skills.
    • History of good job attendance.
    • Must pass a criminal background check, be free from communicable disease and provide a Medical Statement prior to the first day of employment.
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: •
    • To provide active supervision of students and follow all health and safety practices.
    • To assist the primary caretakers (lead teachers) for up to 8 children in the EHS classroom, including personal care such as feedings, changing diapers, using responsive care philosophy.
    • To ensure daily health inspections of each child and the documentation of attendance.
    • To implement nutrition and other identified ECP activities.
    • To assist in planning, implementing and evaluating the learning experiences to support individual progress and appropriate child outcomes using developmentally appropriate practices for infants and toddlers.
    • To use positive guidance techniques to redirect unsafe behavior and to encourage children to develop appropriate social skills according to their age and developmental level.
    • To use daily routines of feeding, diaper changing and dressing as opportunities for playful social interaction and language stimulation.
    • To document and communicate daily routines with parents/caregivers.
    • To document individual children's progress.
    • To participate in activities related to the IFSP process including the implementation of the IFSP goals.
    • To assist in planning activities with lead teachers, aides and volunteers.
    • To assist in coordinating and implementing weekly lesson plans.
    • To participate in staff meetings and trainings.
    • To continuously update and improve professional competence.
    • To maintain good work attendance.
    • To confer with supervisors regarding progress, concerns and recommendations.
    • To assist in the recruitment and referral of children and caregivers for all Early Childhood Programs and services as needed.
    • To attend monthly parent meetings when requested.
    • To assist in home visits and parent teacher conferences to gather information and communicate with parents about their child's progress.
    • To complete monthly reports and other administrative reporting requirements.
    • To follow Head Start Performance Standards, ECP policies, Ohio Department of Education rules, and Step Up To Quality (As applies).
    • To be responsible for security of the building, classroom equipment and material.
    • To assist in the management of inventory control.
    • To ensure that confidentiality practices are maintained at all times, including in district matters.
    • To report the presence of unauthorized or atypical visitors.
    • To maintain records and files as required.
    • To plan and organize own work to meet priorities and deadlines (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly).
    • To comply with state and federal regulations that pertain to the position (e.g. OSHA, OCR).
    • To perform other duties consistent with the position as assigned.
    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    Salary and work year as established by the Governing Board. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non - prescribed controlled substance use in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District.

    Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
