    The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (ATOC) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in climate physics and mathematics to begin as early as August 2025, with the start date negotiable. We seek an outstanding candidate for a tenure-track faculty position in research areas that include observational, experimental, theoretical, and computational methods of studying the Earth's climate system, including Earth's atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere, and their interactions.

    The position is part of a cluster hire in the area of Climate Physics and Mathematics with linked positions in the Departments of Physics and the Department of Applied Mathematics. The Earth's climate is affected by physical processes at work in the cryosphere, ocean, and atmosphere and the study of these processes involves a wide array of methods: observational, experimental, theoretical, and computational. Collaborations between physicists, mathematicians, and climate scientists are needed to make progress across many of the most challenging problems in climate science. CU Boulder is uniquely poised to rapidly become the leading institution in the world in the field of climate physics and mathematics. The campus already has the necessary foundation in place: CU Boulder is the only R1 university in the US with a group in the Physics Department dedicated to Geophysics; the Department of Applied Mathematics is similarly committed to the Earth sciences through its Mathematical Geosciences and Computational Mathematics groups; and the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences is one of the strongest atmospheric and oceanic sciences departments in the world.

    It is expected that the new ATOC faculty member will have a role in building interdisciplinary climate physics and mathematics collaborations with the Departments of Physics and Applied Mathematics. They will also contribute to the new Interdisciplinary Climate Minor program through teaching, service, and mentorship of undergraduate students.     What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

    • We are seeking a candidate who will develop a vibrant research program that complements and expands upon existing strengths within ATOC, the Boulder Campus, and in the Boulder research community, and who is committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring. The faculty member in this position is expected to conduct research and service and teach and mentor in their field.

    What We Can Offer

    Starting salary will be in the range of $95,000 - $118,000 annually depending upon accomplishments and experience.

    What We Require

    • A PhD in Atmospheric Science, Oceanography, Physics, Applied Mathematics or a related field.

    • A record of research and teaching excellence that meets the standards expected for appointment at an R1 doctoral university.
