The School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia seeks an innovative scholar in the area of reading and reading disability for a position at the assistant professor (tenure-track) level. This is a 9-month, salaried faculty position in the Reading Education Program in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction & Special Education. (~~~)
The school is especially interested in applicants whose work spans reading education and special education. Preference will be given to individuals who have a research focus on upper elementary and secondary grades. This faculty member will collaborate with program and department faculty to design and deliver undergraduate, master's, and doctoral-level courses in the Teacher Education and Reading Education programs. They will also advise and mentor master's and doctoral-degree students.
The successful candidate will show evidence of experience designing and conducting rigorous research, working with collaborators across disciplines, seeking extramural research funding, and a strong record of scholarship. A strong candidate will also show evidence of collaborating with colleagues to develop course and/or curriculum materials.
Required qualifications and experience:
Ed.D. or Ph.D. in Education, Reading Education, Special Education, or a related field;
Experience teaching students to read in elementary or secondary education contexts;
A strong record of scholarship that demonstrates the ability to make strong links between theory, one's own research agenda, and implications for practice and policy related to reading instruction for students in K to 12;
Experience teaching courses in reading/literacy development at the post-secondary level.
Preferred qualifications and experience:
Experience working with culturally and/or linguistically diverse students;
Demonstrated research focus on upper elementary and secondary grades;
Experience with online teaching;
A strong record of collaboration with diverse groups of students and faculty;
Evidence of leadership within reading education programs and collaboration across programs or departments (e.g., Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Special Education).
