    Description of Work Unit

    The Office of the Vice President for Research ( OVPR ) has overall responsibility for promoting and facilitating the research enterprise at Colorado State University ( CSU ). The OVPR and its research enable the University, its faculty, staff, and students to be part of a world-class research institution complementing our learning, service, and outreach missions.     The Biosafety Department is a division of the Office of the VP for Research serves as a professional multidisciplinary team. The Biosafety Department serves as the subject matter experts in the promotion of environmental, occupational health, and safety services through education, consultation, monitoring and planning in response to present and future needs of CSU . To support the Board of Governors of the Colorado State University System policies, we will foster the partnership among the university, the community, and government entities.

    The Office of Research Collaboration and Compliance ( ORCC ) resides in the Office of the Vice president for Research. and consists of the Biosafety Office, Institutional Biosafety Committee ( IBC ), the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee ( IACUC ), and Research Safety Culture Program. These groups work with Occupational Health, CSU research community, and others to support CSU's research enterprise. ORCC provides assistance to researchers, staff, and the faculty oversight committees in maintaining an ethical environment for activities in the following research and teaching areas and ensuring the research is conducted safely and securely.

    Position Summary

    The Assistant Director, Biosafety will be expected to possess the professional competency needed to oversees multiple biosafety staff members, provides program and grant management, and serves as the primary point of contact for the majority of CSU's Select Agent Program. This person will also determine the level of appropriate biologic training of investigators for working at BSL -1, BSL -2 and BSL -3 levels.

    Essential job functions include organizing and balancing multiple and competing priorities; managing communication dynamics with investigators; attention to detail; a commitment to confidentiality; skillful navigation of difficult or complex situations and the ability to work closely with others in a dynamic environment.

    This position is hybrid with a weekly onsite component.

    Required Job Qualifications

    • Degree in Microbiology or a closely related major.

    • 3 or more years experience in Microbiological Research or Biosafety or a combination of the two.

    • Qualify within 3 years as a Registered Biosafety Professional or Certified Biological Safety Professional.

    • Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate with peers and researcher

    • Experience performing laboratory outreach visits

    • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and ability to document activities

    • Qualify for and maintain approval for access to Tier 1 Select Agents and Toxins

    • Ability to serve as an Alternate Responsible Official

    Preferred Job Qualifications

    • Research and/or biosafety experience at CSU

    • Experience with biosafety and biosecurity associated with biological, animal, plant, aquatic, and insect laboratories and facilities

    • Experience working in a high containment laboratory

    • Experience developing standard operating procedures and plans

    • Experience with developing safety and security training using universal design principles

    • Experience writing grants and developing budgets

    • Previous supervisory experience

    • Previous experience serving as an Alternate Responsible Official

    • Registered Biosafety Professional or Certified Biosafety Professional

    • Performing audits of biosafety areas to ensure biosafety standards are followed.

    • Perform audits of Select Agent ( BSL -3, ABSL -3 and ACL -3; Plant Sciences BSL -2) and non-select agent laboratories ( BSL -3 and ABSL -3) to ensure that laboratory standards and regulations are rigorously followed.

    • Report to the Biosafety Director and the Environmental Health Services and appropriate support and administrative officials any significant biosafety problems, trends, violations of guidelines or directives, and investigative findings and recommendations relating to active or potential accidents and/or illnesses.

    • Advise the IBC , IACUC , PIs, supervisors and workers as necessary on biohazard security, biosafety, bioengineering and technical compliance questions.

    • Investigate incidents and near misses to ensure CSU researchers are adhering to best practices.

    • Ensure all compliance requirements are being met on an annual basis.

    • Develop communication plans for new initiatives and revised processes.
