Position Summary The Area Manager develops strategic plans for the region, assumes full P&L responsibility, and is accountable for the region's day to day operations. Manages and grows revenues, market share and profit by recognizing business trends and taking advantage of market opportunities. Ensures that the appropriate infrastructure, systems/processes, and people are in place to achieve business objectives, develop new market opportunities, and meet financial/market targets. Identifies and communicates new priorities to properly develop business plans and budgets. Serves as a key member of the management team. Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties - Manages the day-to-day operations of the division; provides strict oversight to ensure that all current construction and maintenance projects are being appropriately developed and are progressing on schedule - Develops a significant understanding of the local market to formulate effective strategic plans - Identifies and develops new business opportunities to grow the division; works closely with the VP Business Development, utilizing relationships, market information and coordinating activities to proactively develop new business opportunities with railroads, industry, and agencies throughout the region - Formulates and communicates a strategic plan and direction - Dedicates time and attention to customers, vendors, and suppliers - Ensures that plans, objectives, and revenue targets are being met - Collaborates with and manages key relationships to effectively integrate efforts for new business, as well as optimizing the creation, development and implementation of new products and services for new revenue opportunities - Provides superior customer service, maintains positive business relations with all vendors and suppliers, and leverages current customer, vendor, and supplier relationships to properly estimate, bid and win proposals - Provides for a safe work environment and maintains required staffing levels and proper maintenance and utilization of equipment - Adheres to all federal state and local regulations - Adheres to collective bargaining agreements and maintains a positive working relationship with the local union Required Skills and Qualifications - Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction or Project Management; an advanced degree is a plus (In lieu of a degree, extensive experience in the military, railroad/construction, or related field will be considered) - A minimum of 5 years' experience in a general management role that required full P&L responsibility in a multi-location business - Broad experience in and understanding of the civil and/or railroad construction industry, including federal and state regulations - Broad experience running a standalone construction business and/or division - Demonstrated progressive responsibility and advancement that includes a proven track record of successful project completion - Strong leadership skills and the ability to effectively build, motivate, manage and develop a high-performance team - Willingness and ability to take full ownership and accountability for all aspects of the region's performance - Strong decision-making and problem resolution skills - Entrepreneurial, results-oriented, and able to work well both independently and successfully as a truly collaborative/contributing team member - Superior business thinker who operates with an analytical, ROI mentality who understands the day-to-day priorities for the division and can see the "big picture" for the company - Willingness to embrace and ability to promote the RailWorks values of Customer Focus, Employee Focus, Industry Leadership, and Integrity - Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication, customer service and presentation skills - Experience in a union environment with responsibility for collective bargaining agreements is a plus - Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office suite Physical Requirements and Working Conditions - Approximately 20% travel, primarily within the region, with some travel throughout the US for various Company meetings and conferences - Works in an office environment - Frequently sits for long periods of time - Frequently speaks, reads, writes, and uses a computer keyboard - May require occasional standing, walking, lifting, stooping, or bending This job description is not intended to represent a complete, comprehensive list of all duties and responsibilities that may be required in this position.  There may be unplanned activities and other duties as assigned.
