Position Summary:
The Pediatric Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works collaboratively with supervising physicians and other APP colleagues to co-manage the pediatric neurosurgical patient according to established practice guidelines and utilizing evidence-based clinical practice standards. The APP is responsible for managing patients within the inpatient setting, outpatient clinic visits, consultations, first-assists within surgical cases, and takes trauma call on a rotating basis.
Responsibilities:
Inpatient Coverage
Daily hospital rounds, progress notes, admissions, consult notes and discharge summaries. Pre-admissions for surgery and H&Ps. First call for all nursing questions, Floor consults, ER Consults and Trauma Consults. Communicate plan of care for floor patients to medical service. Enter in all daily charge notes, responsible for patient education for discharge, set up follow up appointments, and write prescriptions for discharged patients. Responsible for all bedside procedures i.e., shunt reprograms, shunt taps, reservoir or ventricular taps, EVD or ICP monitor insertions and removals
Surgical Coverage
Outpatient Coverage:
Run daily APP Clinic which includes annual follow ups, new patient appointments, and postoperative exams. Rotates through Head Shape Clinic, Spina Bifida Clinic, Spasticity Clinic, Brachial Plexus, Neuro-oncology clinic and any other specialty clinics including satellite clinics. Available for walk-ins or patients requiring same day appointments as needed. Peer to Peer Reviews, Patient Phone Calls, Letters of Medical Necessity, and Radiology/lab Review. Available to office team to answer questions regarding patient concerns or clinical questions. Set up pre admits for preoperative planning and schedule pre surgical Stealth imaging as needed. Performs various outpatient procedures i.e., baclofen pump refills and reprograms, shunt reprograms, shunt or reservoir taps, wound care
Trauma Call:
Provide overnight call coverage rotating with other APPs. Goal is to have 6 full time APPs that can rotate 24/7 call coverage depending on staffing model. This includes weekend coverage. Extra compensation for weekend coverage provided in addition to base salary as well as shift differential for nighttime coverage. Call is currently non-restricted, but APP must come in for urgent consults, admissions and OR cases when needed between the hours of 4pm-7am on the weekdays and 7am Friday to 7am Monday on the weekends. First call for nursing calls, floor consults, parent phone calls, ER consults and Trauma consults. Restricted call coverage may be required in the future based on clinical needs and demands.
Quilty Improvement, Research and Extracurricular
Holiday Coverage:
All 4 minor and 3 major Holidays will require APP coverage and be rotated equally amongst the APP clinical staff. Four minors include Easter, Memorial Day, July 4
th
and Labor Day. Three Majors include Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s
Education:
Attends all educational opportunities offered for neurosciences in person or virtually to include Tumor Board and Epilepsy Conference unless on PTO or leave. Attends at least 1 neurosurgical CME conference per year and actively participates in Journal club every quarter.
Operations:
Attends all neurosurgical provider meetings, staff meetings and Neuroscience department meetings unless on PTO or leave. Encouraged to attend surgical department meetings quarterly, Surgical PIPS review and APP council meetings when scheduled.
Hours:
6 APPs to cover 24/7. Day time operational needs M-F requires staffing 4 APPS for OR coverage, clinic coverage, inpatient hospital coverage and one float APP to be utilized where needed. 6 APPs are needed to fulfill this schedule along with night/weekend coverage.
Qualifications:
E ducation/Training
Graduate of accredited physician assistant program or has obtained an MSN or DNP degree from an accredited nursing school.
Experience
Surgery, Critical Care, Trauma, or ED Fellowship trained APP desired.
Licensure/Certification
Current licensure in State of Florida renewed every two years to include prescriptive authority.
Maintains NCCPA (National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants).
Maintains APRN License and Certification as required by the state of Florida.
(Must have Acute Care Certification.
Registered Nurse Surgical First Assist not required but a plus)Maintains BLS, ACLS & PALS certification as required by department.
