You only get one chance to make a good first impression.

I remember when I was checking into a new command when I was in the Navy and, as I walked towards the Administrative department to check in, there was a mirror on the wall with this saying: “You will only get one chance to make a good first impression.” Sounds kind of silly to have to even mention this, doesn’t it? But the truth of the matter is that most people don’t even think about that. This saying stayed with me for over twenty years now and should definitely stay with you now.

Think about it. You are on an interview. Just stop and picture that mirror on the wall as you are walking towards the interviewer or the receptionist. How do you look? Not just your appearance but your facial expressions, too. Is your face relaxed? Are you smiling? What about your body language? What is it saying? Look in the imaginary mirror. Do you look harried and stressed? Now check your appearance. Is your hair disheveled from running your hands through it because you are stressing about the interview? Are you standing tall or hunching over like you are trying to hide? Did you take the time to straighten your tie or just make sure that you look the part? What about your breath? Did you brush your teeth ahead of time? Are you chewing gum? Spit it out as soon as you can. Do not start the interview with gum in your mouth.

Okay now you have to greet the receptionist or the interviewer. Pay attention – get their name. Even if you are talking to the receptionist – get his/her name and make sure you use it when you leave from the interview. If it is the interviewer, repeat their name and make sure you use it during the interview. You will also need their name to send a thank you after the interview.

Maybe all of this sounds like old hat and you are wondering why I am even taking your time talking about it. As silly as it sounds, the bottom line is: “You only get one chance to make a great first impression?” What impression are you leaving?
