With green energy being the buzz word in industry, what kind of sales jobs does it offer? One job is selling and maintaining wind turbines. Wind turbines make electricity and work opposite a fan. Instead of using electricity to make wind, it uses wind to make electricity. The wind turns the blades which spins the shaft and that connects to a generator and that makes electricity. Sales jobs are opening up in the field and good sales people are needed with three to five years of industry specific (wind and/or solar) experiences or a related field.
What type of requirements are needed for this type of job? You need a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, marketing or a related field. Excellent written, verbal and public speaking skills are needed. Public speaking is necessary because you will be attending and working conventions, trade shows and related events to talk about the product you are selling. You should be able to build a list of customers quickly within the territory you’re given. Strong leadership, interpersonal, presentation and negation skills are also needed for this type of work. You need to be proficient in Word, Power Point and Excel and have excellent financial and analytical skills.
When selling wind turbines, you would be involved in acquiring new accounts through cold calling. You need to be able to manage established customer accounts as well. You'll be developing a sales plan for servicing wind gear boxes. You would be monitoring the states of accounts receivable and also work with the accounting department and customers to resolve and discrepancies. You would also maintain good customer contact to ensure customer coverage. Any problems that developed would be your responsibility to solve them. You would intensify any areas of undeveloped sales and recommend a plan to develop them. You would conduct market analysis and networking as well as provide input to sales forecast and budgeting. You need to develop creative ideas to increase acceptance of the products. Helping customers to achieve their needs for renewable energy products would be part of your job too. In addition, you would be determining the products and services that meet customer requirements.
What about the physical requirements? Well, you would be traveling about 75% of the time so you wouldn’t be home a lot. You will have to be able to climb inside wind towers to inspect turbine generators. You would have to be in decent physical shape to be able to accomplish that. All in all, it's a field that is opening up quickly. Is it something YOU would be interested in?
