Ways You Can Kick-Start Your Job Search After A Layoff

Layoffs are scary for anyone, especially if you've done nothing wrong to merit losing your job. After spending some time taking deep breaths and contemplating your career situation, jump head-first into a job search with renewed vigor.

Make a concerted effort to find a job you really want as opposed to sending your resume to anyone and everyone. Now that you have some time on your hands, sit down and determine what you really want from your professional life. When performing a job search, look for positions that actually mesh with your skills rather than ones that are not a good fit.

If possible, learn some new skills. Take an online course in marketing, accounting, legal research, electronic wiring, or any subject that can beef up your skills for the next position. Examine the job descriptions for your ideal positions, and see which skills you lack. Complete an online course while you wait for a call. Some skills may actually relate to your job search, such as resume writing, interview skills and composing cover letters.

Completely refresh your resume by going through it line by line, retooling it and making it better. That means changing keywords to fit the positions you want, replacing dead-end words with active verbs, and creating a personal brand. Get rid of the "Objective" category at the top, and replace it with a "Professional Summary." Add some bullet points that stand out for human eyes to see, and add any new skills you've acquired over the years.

Clean up your social media profiles to make them match your career direction. Get rid of any inappropriate photos or comments, and spruce them up to look more professional. Complete your LinkedIn profile as much as possible, and seek out new networking connections.

To continue making money during your job search, go back to work part time while looking for a full-time position. Find a temporary job that keeps you active and positive while helping to reduce stress from lost income. During down time, watch job postings daily until your dream job appears.

I agree with getting a part time job while searching. It helps keeping your mind active and in "work mode".
