Want to Enhance Your Utilities Career? Attend the World Energy Congress in Montreal 2010

Posted by in Career Advice

If you're looking to expand your horizons and your career in the utilities industry, you might want to attend the 21st Congress of the World Energy Council from September 12 to 16, 2010 in Montreal.

The event will host more than 3,500 delegates from over a hundred countries, representing all energy sectors. These movers and shakers in the utilities industry will meet to discuss the challenges the energy sector will face in the next two and half decades. Over 42 energy sectors will be represented, and more than 200 exhibitors will gather at the Montreal Convention Centre to display the latest advances and breakthroughs in energy technology and research.

It's becoming painfully obvious that greenhouse gases and climate related challenges will impact the utility industry on a global scale. Currently, nearly one third of the world's population (over 2 billion people) are without a reliable energy supply. Prices will rise as the demand for energy grows, particularly in developing countries like China, India, Brazil and Russia.

China, by the way, has begun to move in the right direction when it comes to sustainability. During the 2008 Olympics Games, for example, the country took steps to create a cleaner, greener, healthier Beijing. See my article How Sustainable Were the 2008 Olympics?

As we move into the next decade, the energy industry will have to confront major challenges that pit increasing energy needs against environmental and social concerns. While 86% of the world's energy supply still comes from the combustion of fossil fuels, the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions will become more urgent as health concerns rise. Reconciling these competing forces will call for huge investments in research and the development of new technologies. All the more reason for utilities engineers, scientists and technicians to become aware of emerging technologies in energy creation and distribution.
