Want A Promotion? Part 1

Posted by in Career Advice

You have worked long and hard at your job. You have your eye on the next position up or a position in another sales department. What can you do to achieve your goal? Below are some suggestions to help you obtain that goal.

1. Have a plan: As in everything major, you have to have a plan of action. There are questions you need to ask yourself. What is your key strength that got you the position you’re in now? Can it be used in the position you want? Do you have any weaknesses that need corrected? Is this promotion for a new department or within the same department you’re in but higher up? What do you have that would have your boss choose you over other qualified candidates?

2. Having the skills, knowledge and direction needed: To know the direction you’re going in is important as well as having the skills and knowledge. Expand your knowledge and skills in areas that are important to the organization. You need to not only keep current in your own field but in the job you’re looking at. Learn to be a good listener. You will develop a reputation as being easy to talk to and you’ll have an ear to the ground. Don’t gossip, but listen to what’s going on in your company. You need good communication skills to promote yourself. You need to convey that you know what you’re talking about and understand it.

3. Go above and beyond what’s expected of you: First of all, do your best work now. Concentrate on the task at hand, not what you have already achieved. Volunteer for work and take the intuitive to make a job better. If there’s a problem but you have the expertise to solve it, even if it’s not your department, volunteer to help. If you get the opportunity, do work from the level you want to be promoted to. This shows you are capable of handling work from that position already. Perform quality work and develop a reputation for getting things done the right way the first time. Be a self starter. If you are assigned work, start early and finish early.

4. Look at a challenge as an opportunity: Don’t look at a challenge as additional work to be done. Use it to shine instead and apply yourself at your fullest. Don’t complain about the work being harder than everyone else’s. Everyone thinks that they have the most difficult job and you’ll look like a whiner.

In Part 2, we’ll continue our discussion on getting a promotion and how to achieve that goal.
