Use These Tips to Find Seasonal Work

Companies hire millions of seasonal workers to ring up purchases, wrap gifts, sell Christmas trees and make sure gifts reach their intended recipients on time and in one piece. Finding a seasonal job is a lot like finding a permanent position, but there are some key differences. If you want to earn some extra cash this holiday season, follow these tips to get a seasonal job you enjoy.

1. Be Flexible

Some stores extend their holiday shopping hours, so they need employees willing to work late in the evening and on weekends. You also need to be flexible about your work location. If a retailer has three locations in your town, you are more likely to get the job if you tell the hiring manager you are willing to work at any of those locations.

2. Maintain a Positive Attitude

As a seasonal worker, you're expected to deal with long lines and frustrated customers on a daily basis. You need to be able to maintain a good attitude and keep a smile on your face. If you get a commission-based seasonal job, a good attitude is especially important. Customers are more likely to buy high-priced products from a friendly salesperson than one who walks around scowling. If you need to blow off steam, wait until your lunch break. Don't take out your frustration on colleagues or customers.

3. Be Honest

If you are really in need of extra cash, it's tempting to lie about your availability during the interview process, but you need to be honest with the hiring manager. Fibbing about your availability makes you look like a liar, and it makes it difficult for your department manager to create a work schedule that is fair for everyone. Even worse, lying to get a seasonal job is sure to ruin your chances of getting a permanent position with the company.

4. Start Early

Don't wait until the middle of November to start looking for a seasonal job. You probably won't start until the Friday after Thanksgiving, but you need time to submit applications and meet with interviewers. For best results, start searching for a seasonal job by the end of October. If you are applying for retail positions, you probably don't need a resume, but you should make sure you have a list of references ready. Before applying for a seasonal job, make sure you have everything you need to complete the hiring process. If you are missing any required documents, such as a Social Security card, apply for replacements well in advance of the holiday season.

The holiday season is a great time to earn extra cash, but you need to be prepared to look for work by the end of October. If you follow these tips, you have a good chance of getting a seasonal job and becoming one of the millions of seasonal workers that help give the economy a boost during the fourth quarter.
