Using social media websites during your online job search is a great way to connect with others within your industry. Most organizations use at least one social media platform to engage with the public and expand their professional networks. With a small amount of effort, you can use social media to easily connect with industry professionals and build relationships that can help you land your next job.

Create a Professional Social Media Image

Before starting an online job search, it is essential to create a professional social media persona. Many job recruiters check social media profiles, so it's important to present yourself in a positive light. Select an image of yourself that's professional and work-appropriate, and use this image as your main profile picture. Avoid using photos that include your friends, pets or colleagues as your main profile image, and never post images or videos of yourself engaging in inappropriate or illegal activities. Don't use profanity or complain excessively when posting on your profile, and never trash former employers or make controversial statements. Use social media to maintain a positive social media presence that uplifts, encourages or enlightens anyone who visits your page.

Link a Resume to Your Profile

During your online job search, link your resume to your social media profile. Sites like LinkedIn and Xing make it easy for job seekers to post resumes, cover letters and other professional documents. If you're using Facebook, Twitter or a similar social media platform, post a link of your resume on your main profile page. Posting your resume on an active social media account lets others know that you're actively seeking employment. You can also link your Facebook or Twitter account to your LinkedIn or Xing profile, and vice versa.

Join Industry-Related Groups

One of the easiest ways to connect with industry professionals during your online job search is to join industry-related groups. Search for associations, alumni organizations or any groups that align with your professional interest, and request to join. Once you're a member, begin adding value to group discussions and posting new industry-related information, as this might lead recruiters and other professionals to click on and review your profile. Make sure you're always professional when communicating online, and avoid sharing information that might cause controversy. Answer questions other group members have on topics that are relevant to your skill set or professional experience, and always be on the lookout for job listings posted by group members.

Highlight Your Professional Accomplishments

Throughout your online job search, don't hesitate to post images of industry-specific awards, medals or trophy you received, as this might impress potential employers who are searching through your profile. It's also a good idea to highlight the work of others within your organization or field during your online job search, even if you don't know them personally. Post articles about people who made major breakthroughs or accomplished great things in your field to show your passion for the industry.

Take your online job search efforts to another level by incorporating the use of social media. Doing so allows you to easily connect with potential employers and other professionals within your field, which might be just what you need to land your dream job.
