It’s a tough economy. Good jobs are scarce. But if you’re an administrative professional, you have a leg up. There are a number of areas you can move up to or segue into, provided you keep up your skills and knowledge. Here are three key areas where admin pros are constantly in demand:
Healthcare. Administrative professionals are constantly needed in the healthcare industry. These medical secretaries are highly specialized individuals who keep things running smoothly in today’s medical offices and hospitals. They typically record and update patient medical history files, schedule and coordinate hospital stays, order supplies, transcribe dictation, prepare correspondence, and help doctors and physician assistants and med-techs with reports, lectures, articles and conferences. They usually have a working knowledge of medical and drug terminology, insurance rules, billing practices, and hospital procedures.
Education. Today’s schools--whether elementary, middle or high school--must keep detailed records of students, teachers, and the almost countless activities on campus. These admin pros help coordinate everything from school lunches to purchasing books and supplies. They must be computer savvy and handle such details as bus schedules, room assignments and registration; in short, everything it takes to run a school day like clockwork.
Legal. Sometimes called legal secretaries, administrative professionals who work in law offices must be well versed in legal terminology. To keep things running smoothly, they must be computer savvy and be able to teach new lawyers how to prepare legal documents. They are the shepherds of vital paperwork that can make or break a case. These include documents like summons, complaints, motions, responses and subpoenas. They may also assist lawyers and paralegals with legal research. And they must be skilled in setting up meetings with clients.
