Tips on What to Wear to Work

Posted by in Career Advice

As you are embarking on your new career (probably your first career), you will inevitably wonder what business casual truly looks like. If you are interviewing for a job, I suggest dressing "better" than you would on a normal day at that job. For most professionals, that means a nicely tailored suit. For some creative jobs, I suggest looking into your particular industry to see what is considered appropriate.

I did some research and found this article to be quite helpful in determining outfit guidelines for the majority of working professionals. I like this article because it offers a variety of tips depending on how casual your office is. Once summer comes around, most people don't know what is appropriate. I know some people who think it is alright to wear flip flops (regular flip flops, not sandals) to work with a tank top and long shorts. The truth is it might be acceptable, depending on your industry. If you are new to a job, however, it is best to play it safe and see what your older colleagues wear to work, even if you have a 'dress down Friday.'

I also think this article offers great advice for recent college graduates on workplace attire. It offers 'safe bets' for any work place (i.e. a nice, fitted blazer and slacks). Stockings are still debatable, but in my experience most younger women do not wear them in the summer. Overall, as a young professional it is best to 'overdress' for your first job. Since you are younger, you will have to work harder to achieve a professional image. If you stick to neutrals and minimal jewelry and accessories, you will present a a classic look.

It is helpful to ask a veteran in your field for advice on what is appropriate for your line of work. If you do not know anyone in your field, you can ask around at a networking or industry event. I have found that people are always happy to help where wardrobe is concerned.
