When you are looking for a job, one resource that is often overlooked are job fairs. These gatherings bring together many businesses as well as other people looking for work in the same industry as you. While some people may tell you that job fairs are a waste of time and effort, there are actually many ways to benefit from attending your local job fair.

Job fairs are great opportunities for career networking. Job fairs bring numerous employers to one place at a set time. If a number of employers attending a job fair offer positions relevant to your career field, the possibilities of finding a suitable position are even greater. Even if you do not secure a job with any of the companies at the fair immediately, you have a better chance in the future once you make yourself known. This type of career networking, with local businesses, often comes in handy in the future.

The companies are one aspect of job fairs, another is the people. Job fairs are also a great place for networking opportunities with other job seekers in your industry. Speak with other people at the job fair to learn what other companies are hiring in your industry and what the interview process is like. Networking with people that work in the same industry but in different positions as you is the most beneficial, since you are not competing for the same jobs.

Job fairs also provide you with great interview practice. It is a chance to talk to potential employers and learn what they are looking for in their employees. When you attend the job fair, watch and observe how other job seekers interact with potential employers. Do not just observe what they say, pay attention to everything from how the people are dressed to body language and tone of voice. It is surprising how much you can learn from observing others about what works and what does not work when talking to potential employers.

Finally, showing up to a job fair puts you in a better position to get a job than others who just turn in applications or apply online. If you learn that a company you have applied with is sending representatives to a job fair, it is a very good idea to attend the fair yourself and express your interest in the company in person. It is an easy way to give the business a face to associate with your resume and application.

Job fairs are not a waste of time, especially if you know how to use the resource to your advantage. Network with other job seekers as well as possible employers at the fair and do not stress if you are not offered a job on the spot. There is a lot to learn at local job fairs.
