The Toughest Interview Question of The Week - If You Won The Lottery, Would You Still Work?

Posted by in Career Advice

Its that time again, time for the Toughest Interview Questions. If you are looking for a new manufacturing job, then you know how important it is to be prepared for all of the questions you may be asked at your next interview.

Each week, we examine a tough interview question to find out where the traps are and come up with a great answer.

Here is the Toughest Interview Question of the Week:

Question:
If you won the $20 Million in the lottery, would you still work?

Why it's a trap: Even if your first response would be “Oh, Heck no!”, this isn't what an interviewer wants to hear. The question is designed to find out if you are someone who is doing what they love, or if you are just in it for the paycheck. Even if you are mostly interested in the paycheck, you would never want to admit that. If you said that you would want to keep doing exactly what you are doing now, then the interviewer knows that you are lying and will say almost anything to get the job.

The Best Answer: Since you know that the question is designed to find out your attitudes about work and how much you like what you do, your answer should focus on your positive feelings about your chosen career path.

Some of the best answers are to say that after you recovered from the shock of winning the lottery, you would still be someone who believes that working toward some sort of purpose is what makes people feel happy and useful. After all, money doesn't buy happiness, and you can't imagine being happy long term without feeling like you are being useful.

Another possible way to answer this is to say that having that much money would make things easier, but that you would still want to be involved in your career in some fashion. But, if you weren't concerned with earning a living, you would have more flexibility and the options to work a bit different.

However, I still think that the best answer is to simply say that it isn't likely that you would win the lottery, because you rarely ever play. That it seems to you that it is much easier, and much more likely to create your own happiness and luck by working hard and achieving success the old-fashioned way. A strong work ethic has created many fortunes, and most of them are longer lasting and larger than most of the lottery jackpots.
