Get prepared for your next interview with our interview question of the week.
There isn't much that can cause as much anxiety as a job interview. If you have been looking for a new job, then you know what I'm talking about. The thing is, in order to really stand out from the crowd, you have to be prepared with ready answers to anything an interviewer might ask.
If you're like most of us, coming up with the best answers when you're under pressure isn't easy. So, to help you get prepared, each week we take another interview question and break it down in order to come up with the best answer.
So, here you have it, The Interview Question of the Week:
Question:
Why do you want to work at our company?
Why it's a trap:
The main objective of this question is to find out if you have done any research about the company. The interviewer is trying to determine if you have a real passion to work at their company or if you are mainly interested in finding any job.
If you haven't done your homework and you don't have a ready answer for this question, you will be missing out on a chance to score huge points by demonstrating that you take your job search seriously and that you are looking for a job that is the right fit for you.
The best answer:
This question is the perfect opportunity to make yourself stand out from the pool of prospective candidates by showing the interviewer that you want to work for their company.
Before you go on any interview, you should get online and do some research on the company and the job opening. It's a good idea to find out anything you can about the company, the corporate culture, any plans they have in the works and get an idea of where the company is at and what they are looking for.
After doing all of that research, it shouldn't be too difficult to come up with several reasons why the job opening would be a good fit for you and why this particular company is a place you want to work. You can hit on your main selling points and show how they would benefit the company, based on your research.
The main thing here is that this question needs to be written out ahead of time and practiced until you are sure that you can deliver your answer under pressure without stammering. The last thing you want is to leave the hiring manager with the idea that even your livelihood isn't important enough for you to do a little extra investigation.
If, for some reason, after all of your research you can't think of a good answer to this question, you may want to ask yourself why you would be interviewing at a company that isn't a good fit for you.
What do you think about this question and answer? Are there other questions you would like me to tackle here?
