The Interview Question of the Week - Where Do You See Yourself Five Years From Now?

Posted by in Career Advice

Once again, it's time for the Interview Question of the Week!

For most job seekers, being invited to interview for a job is exciting. The interview is their chance to wow the hiring manager and is a door to the opportunity they have been looking for. This is the chance to shine, and the best way to stand out from the crowd is to be prepared for anything the interviewer might throw out.

In order to help you get prepared, each week we take a new interview question and break it down to come up with the best possible answer. When you think about your answers to these questions ahead of time, you will already have an idea of how you want to answer it, and you won't have to worry about suddenly drawing a blank or stammering through it.

So, here is the Interview Question of the Week:

Question:
Where do you see yourself five years from now?

Why its a trap:
This question is used most often to determine if you are just settling for this position and also they may be wanting to determine you level of ambition. Although some people will say that you should answer this very confidently, you run the risk of sounding presumptuous or give the impression that you wouldn't be happy in the position long-term.

The best answer:
The best way to answer this is to let the interviewer know that you are looking to make a long term commitment to your next job. Make sure you tell them that the position they have open is exactly what you have been looking for, and it is a job you are well-qualified to do. As for the future, be humble, and tell them that you are certain that if you excel in this job other opportunities will open up.

For example: “I am very interested in making a long-term commitment to my next job. I am tired of the job search, and I want to find the job that is the right fit for me. This job is very exciting to me, it is a job that I am well-qualified to do, and what's more, it is where my passion is. As far as my future career path goes, I am certain that once I prove myself and excel at this position, new opportunities will open up for me here.”

By answering the question this way, you are restating your desire and ability to perform the job and letting the interviewer know that you are ready to build a career with a company rather than just job hopping.

What do you think about this question and answer? Are there other questions you would like to see answered here? Let me know in the comments.
