The very proud Agent Boris |
They have just launched a new website that includes a YouTube channel, a Flicker photo stream and many games and other information about the agency's history. According to a report at FastCompany, CIA Director Leon E. Panetta said:
“The idea behind these improvements is to make more information about the Agency available to more people, more easily. The CIA wants the American people and the world to understand its mission and its vital role in keeping our country safe.”
Agent Bradley |
The new website also includes a kids' page that teaches children what the CIA does and that they don't actually spy in the way that you might see on TV. The kids' section offers fun games, puzzles and interesting articles about the history of the Agency.
One of the cutest things though, is the CIA K-9 Cam. It introduces kids to the CIA dogs and shows them how these dogs grow up and how they are trained. The video introduced us to Bradley, an explosive sniffing dog who gives us a mini-tour of the CIA. Take a look:
I am not sure why the CIA has decided to promote itself so vigorously to the younger audience, but it is telling that under the puppy videos there is a career link. Maybe the CIA is trying to change their image so that more children start dreaming about being an intelligence agent. Back when I was a kid, there were plenty of spy shows on TV showing daring agents gathering information about the Soviets. Little kids loved to play spy games and some dreamed of growing up to be a spy themselves.
Perhaps the CIA is expecting to have trouble getting trained recruits over the next decade and is trying to raise awareness about the job the CIA does for the country.
Have you visited the CIA's new site? Let me know what you think in the comments.
