It’s that time of year again. The smell of money is in air and everyone is getting ready. Can you feel the anticipation? Can you hear the paper rustling? I’m so excited that I can’t sit still. I just can’t wait!
No, I don’t mean Christmas. That’s what has my 8 year old jumping up and down from dawn to dusk. I’m revved on the adult equivalent to Santa Claus coming... tax time! After all the presents are open and before the decorations are put away, I’ll be ready to crunch the numbers and file my return as fast as I possibly can on January 1st. I’m a math nerd like that and love tax prep practice.
If you’re like me and like a little light math on the side this is the time of year to consider supplementing your job search with a tax preparation class. December is the best time to get a side job with Uncle Sam since the real estate market tends to slow down around Christmas and New Year’s.
Start your studies sooner rather than waiting until your W-2s arrive as a reminder will allow you to work the full tax season. You’ll be first in line when the best firms start hiring and you will also get a better return for yourself with knowledge of the latest tax laws.
Real estate professionals make excellent preparers. Tailor your resume to highlight your familiarity with forms, facts and figures. Knowledge of property laws can also help clients with questions about deductions in those areas. They also have a similar style of office dress code so you should be able to easily acclimate without needing to buy a new wardrobe.
Sometimes a temporary position can turn into a full time opportunity and your path can be led in a new direction. Other times you can meet a plethora of professionals from around the area and make connections that will aid you on the job hunt once tax season has subsided.
