Starting a job search can be overwhelming, mentally draining and, at times, discouraging. Taking the time to compose yourself and get some stress relief puts you in a better frame of mind and may even improve your chances of success. Follow these six tips to effectively let go of stress during the job search process.
1. Restore Your Self-Confidence
Being unemployed or unhappy in your current position can leave you feeling down in the dumps. If your self-esteem has taken a big hit during your job search, step back and look at your life. Think about the good qualities that you have to offer outside the work environment. De-stress by surrounding yourself with family members or close friends. As some of your biggest supporters, these people can help to give your self-confidence level a much-needed boost.
2. Write a Letter of Motivation
Rather than writing a boring old cover letter, write a letter of motivation that focuses more deeply on your skills and qualifications. Include bullet points that demonstrate accomplishments and achievements that are related to the job for which you're applying. Read this letter to yourself a few times before you send it to boost your confidence and self-worth. Feeling positive about your chances of success helps diminish your stress levels.
3. Commiserate With Others
Keep in mind that you aren't the only person going through a rough patch with your employment. Don't stress yourself about employment gaps on your resume, as employers are understanding of the predicament in today's economy. Reach out to other job-search hopefuls through online forums, networking events or job clubs to connect with fellow job seekers.
4. Take a Break
When the job search becomes too stressful, take a break from it. Step away from your computer keyboard for a few minutes to take a walk around your neighborhood. If you're sick of sitting at home searching for jobs and editing your resume all day, take your laptop to a local coffee place or library for a change of scenery.
5. Schedule "You" Time
If you have a hard time forcing yourself to take breaks, schedule some time for yourself every day. Go to the gym for an hour, watch your favorite television show, or read the newspaper. Getting your mind off your job search for a bit is another way to reduce stress.
6. Practice and Plan
As your preparedness level increases, your stress level decreases. Anticipate some questions that an interviewer may ask you, and practice your answers until you feel comfortable. Plan some thoughtful questions you can ask during an interview to show your interest in the position.
Whether you're dealing with unemployment or unhappy in your current position, your life is likely stressful enough. Follow these six steps to get some stress relief during the job search process and ensure your success.
