Signs That the Interviewer is Just Going Through the Motions

It can be frustrating to spend a significant amount of time on interview preparation only to arrive to a job interview and find that the interviewer is just going through the motions. Unfortunately, some companies conduct interviews as a formality when they have already decided on a candidate to hire. If you suspect that you are attending an interview when a decision has already been made, these signs may confirm your suspicions.

The Interviewer is Unqualified

If you find yourself sitting in a job interview with an employee who does not represent the human resources department or hiring department, it could be a sign that the job interview is just a formality. For example, the questions asked may seem vague or general and the individual is unable to answer specific questions about the position. Make the most of this opportunity by putting your interview preparation. Practice selling your skills and experience so the interview does not seem like a waste of time.

The Interview is Rushed

You may sense that the job interview is just for show if the interviewer seems rushed for time. Although some interviews can be brief, if the interviewer pushes through a script, cuts you off when you elaborate on your responses or continually checks his or her watch, it is likely a candidate has already been chosen for the job. Use this opportunity to continue practicing your interview skills. Take note of the interviewer's body language, and practice mimicking his mannerisms. Make eye contact, and smile often. Even though the position may be filled, making a good impression increases your chance of obtaining another position with the company.

The Questions Are Vague

Typically, hiring managers ask specific questions about your compensation requirements, your availability and your reasons for wanting to work for the company during a job interview. If the interviewer glosses over these important questions and focuses on more general topics, it could be a sign that the position has been filled. Don't let this stop you from making a good first impression, though. Turn those general questions into valuable opportunities to dig deeper into why you are qualified to work for the company. Keep your responses brief, yet specific. Even though this position may not be available, the information you provide could make you eligible for future openings.

It is not ideal to waste time during your job search, so if you suspect you have an interviewer who is just going through the motions, it's important to try your best to gain something from the experience. Use this job interview to hone your interviewing skills and show your professionalism so you can make a great impression and increase your opportunities with the firm when additional positions open in the future.
