Shake On It

Posted by in Career Advice

It's your first interview for your dream teaching job. Your nerves are working overtime. Your stomach is full of butterflies and your palms are clammy, sweaty messes. OH NO! Your palms are sweaty and you are going to have to shake hands with the interviewer any minute!

A good handshake is an essential piece to a good first impression so what do you do? Here are some basics to a great handshake:

  1. Before your interview consider getting a manicure or at least giving your hands a quick once over. You will want your nails relatively short, clean and free of chipped or worn nail polish.

  2. Wash your hands as close to the interview as possible. This will remove oils that might cause you to sweat more then usual.

  3. Keep a tissue in your pocket or purse, this way you can discreetly reach in and blot the sweat from your palms as your interview approaches.

  4. Offer your hand first if possible. It shows initiative and you appear more open and receptive.

  5. Your handshake should be firm. Don't squeeze too hard or offer a weak hand and adjust your grip to that of the interviewer.

  6. A handshake should last two to three seconds with only a slight up and down pumping motion.

  7. Avoid exaggerated pumping motions or unconventional handshakes or greetings.

  8. Lastly, smile and make eye contact during the handshake. Your goal is to come across both friendly and professional.

Don't forget, a great handshake is both the perfect way to greet someone and it is also the best way to finish an interview and say good-bye. In a panel interview shake hands with each person on the panel and call them by name whenever possible.

If there is a secretary or other person who assists you be sure to thank them as they assist you and if possible acknowledge them again as you leave. There is no need to shake hands with them but politeness goes a long way. Many employers will be watching for signs on how you treat other people when you don't think they are paying attention.
