Resume Follow-Up: Pushy or Savvy?

As the job market remains steady for skilled accounting professionals, many may be considering new opportunities. After submitting resumes to prospective employers, candidates may wonder if they’ll be perceived as pushy if they contact the hiring manager to check the status of their applications. A recent survey suggests this may not be the case. Eighty-two percent of executives polled by Robert Half International said job seekers should contact hiring managers within two weeks of submitting application materials.   • Why should I follow up with a hiring manager? Employers value initiative and enthusiasm, and a thoughtful post-resume communication underscores these traits. This extra step can give you a significant advantage over less-proactive candidates and is another opportunity for you to reiterate your interest in the position and highlight how you can contribute to the organization’s success.

  • How should I follow up? According to the survey mentioned above, 38 percent of executives preferred e-mail, while 33 percent favored a phone call. Keep in mind, though, that your communication method is less important than the message itself. When contacting a potential employer, demonstrate your knowledge of the company while reinforcing your qualifications and interest in the position.

  • What should I say or write? Since hiring managers are typically busy people, you’ll need to deliver your message succinctly. Prepare a 30-second “elevator pitch” before actually sending the e-mail or making the call.

  • What should I not say when contacting hiring managers? Don’t bring up how much you’d like to be paid or how much vacation you expect. Reinforce your value to the organization and express your enthusiasm for the opportunity.
