Responsibility Comes With Ownership

Posted by in Career Advice

Owning your own home can be a blessing as well as a curse. You have the freedom to be able to do whatever you please but you also the responsibility of maintenance. Keeping your real estate maintained can save you lots of headaches in the long run. Fixing problems before they get worse is also an excellent idea. The little leak in the roof today can be a deluge disaster in a bad rainstorm or winter’s weather tomorrow!

Take our roof for example. Last year’s winter weather pulled off shingles and buckled some of the remaining ones. The ice bent our spouting in the back part of the house into a U shape. After our insurance adjuster came out and looked at it, we had to find a reputable roofer to do the work we needed. The roofer we chose came highly recommended. He was totally insured and had references. He showed us where the last roofer had laid the roof over the existing shingles. He also showed us where the flashing had been put on upside down. He explained the method that he was going to use, laying shingles on top of each other to demonstrate. He also produced a book for us to choose what color of shingles we wanted. He was very efficient and professional. When he and his helper showed up, they were on time and very courteous. There wasn’t any profane language used and they cleaned up any mess that was made from the job. We were so pleased with the work that they did that we’re going to use them to redo our roof on the side porch in the spring.

When choosing someone to work on your house, always check the credentials. Make sure they are insured and call the references to see if there was any problems on the last job. If possible, get an address or two and go and look at the work that was done and talk to the people. Roofs are a great expense and you don’t want to have to redo it in 5 years because of a faulty job. There are too many fly by nights company that are ready and willing to rip you off. If they aren’t willing to give you what you want, then pass them by.

Remember it’s your responsibility to make sure you get the best service for your money.
