Looking your best from top to bottom is essential for getting that perfect job. What should you put on the bottom to keep the professional look going all the way to your toes? You may think you're wearing the perfect shoes to compliment your outfit, but are you wearing the perfect shoes to compliment you for your interview?
Women often think that their heels are a sign of class and elegance but Desiree Stimpert from About.com says to avoid overly high heels; “shoes with extremely high heels can actually call too much attention to your footwear. The emphasis should be on you and your skills, and not on your shoes.”.
Desiree goes on to tell us the importance of our shoes being in good condition; “While many of us obsess over our shoes, for many, they're merely a means of covering and protecting the feet. Therefore, not a lot of attention is given to how they look. But to make a great first impression, you should pay attention to the details. Your shoes should be shined or buffed, scuff and dirt-free, and should not have any visible strains, rips or tears. While new shoes should remove all of those concerns, you need to be careful that they're comfortable and easy to walk in before the actual interview day.”.
Jobs in Real Estate often require more out of your feet then you might think. From hosting open houses where indoor shoes require soles that wont damage floors, to touring homes with clients and taking your shoes on and off quickly and easily. If you are working with clients who may be looking to purchase new homes in the construction phase keep a pair of flat, fully closed in shoes available for touring homes and sites under construction. It is also a good idea to keep a pair of comfortable shoes handy for simple running around and when you are not dealing with the public, to keep your feet from becoming over stressed and worn out any faster then they have to.
Not only do your shoes count but what's underneath them when you are in a position where you may be removing your shoes counts too. Make sure your socks or stockings do not have holes or runs, that they match and that they are work appropriate (bright colors or patterns can be distracting, remember clients will be looking at floors which is also where your feet are located.). During summer months when you may be wearing open toed shoes or sandals be aware of how your feet themselves look. You don't need a fifty dollar pedicure every other day, but keeping your nails trimmed and any polish fresh and chip free is a simple and easy plan.
So remember when trying to climb up the corporate ladder, look down and make sure your feet are not holding you back.
