Pushing the Professional Envelopes

Posted by in Career Advice

Paying attention to even the tiniest details is of utmost importance on the job hunt. Even small slip ups, no matter how subtle, can be costly. Make sure you show them you are the most professional candidate by utilizing your knowledge on the etiquette of envelopes.

If you are mailing your intent to apply for a job, the company will see the envelope well before the cover letter and resume included inside. You wouldn’t show up to an interview in a suit that doesn’t fit so it’s important to find an envelope that’s just the right size.

Usually that will be a standard business envelope that’s 4-1/8 x 9-1/2 inches. You’ll want to stack your cover letter on top of your resume and fold it twice like an accordion being sure that the “To Whom it May Concern” info still remains on top so it’s the first thing visible when the paperwork is slid from its casing.

When addressing the envelope there are certain guidelines that should be followed too. Always include the return to sender address in the top left hand corner. Even if you have super cute name label stickers stick to preprinted or handwritten only addresses on your resume envelope.

Also make sure the stamp is appropriate and doesn’t unwittingly give way any answers to otherwise taboo topics like age, race, or religious affiliation, which could lead to discrimination. Purchasing and placing “Forever” stamps on an envelope can save you money. It also illustrates to a potential employer that you are frugal and think ahead for the future.

Center the business’s address on the envelope and add directions for your document once it’s delivered. Be sure to list the name of the specific department or division on a separate line under the name of the business. If you’re not sure what to annotate simply scrawl ATTN: Hiring Manager.

Write out the full address including suite numbers and don’t abbreviate the words for Street, Road or Avenue. For added likelihood of on time delivery underline the zip code so sorters and machines can quickly send your letter on its way.

Now flip it over. You don’t want to seal it with a kiss but a wax stamp is a very affordable option at a craft store and pardon the pun but it leaves a lasting impression.
