New Year Solutions

Posted by in Career Advice

It's that time of year where many people explore resolutions for the upcoming year. What will I do differently so that I receive a positive outcome? But before thinking ahead, I think it's a good idea to reflect on 2010. What went well? What didn't go so well, and why? What changes could you make to improve things in 2011? I've read that it's best to set reasonable goals that are not too complicated. For instance, if you want to get a higher GPA, it's a good idea to devise a plan that will help you achieve the goal. Starting with a plan to achieve your goal is usually the first step. For example, what classes do you have in the spring semester and how many hours will you need to study to improve your GPA?

I like to view these steps as solutions to something you want to improve upon, instead of resolutions. For me, it's easier to manage in clear, logical steps. This article gives great insight to those who are in job-seeking mode. Take what advice works best for your personal situation and try to learn as you go. Personally, my #1 piece of advice is to be patient. It's tempting to rush into the New Year with high hopes, but make sure you keep your perspective. Many others are in the same boat as you and want a job as badly. Come up with your year plan, set goals, and good things will happen.
