New Domain Name Ending for Internet Websites

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that new domain endings would be introduced for a pricey fee. Currently, the well known “.com” for private and public companies and organizations, “.org” used for education and government purposes, and “.net” may decrease in popularity as companies, personal website creators and government agencies can now alter the ending to be any word. ICANN will be charging at least $185,000 for each domain application name. The gain of purchasing one’s own domain ending is the advantage of branding. It gives authenticity to the brand and name. It also eliminates scam websites as the unique website you are searching would be the only website to have that specific domain ending suffix. The disadvantage in purchasing a distinctive domain ending suffix include potential legal battles and many industries, companies, agencies, programs and interest groups have similar names do to the popularity of certain words. Companies interested in such a venture include companies and governments but not for competition reasons. It is scheduled to launch in July 2012.
