Membership Sales Representative

Do you have a “golden tongue”? Are you able to sell anything to anyone? Are challenges something you look forward to? If so check out this job.


Being a Membership Sales Representative is all this and more. You are selling and promoting memberships to potential new members and selling renewals or upgrades to currant gym members. You have to have an eye for detail, excellent written and verbal skills and be able to communicate without supervision. You will need to work independently and exhibit sound judgment. Computer skills in Microsoft office suite, Excel, Word and Outlook are essential. You will have to meet or exceed new member activation goals in assigned territory. You may have to assist Member Care Specialist as required or exceed plan retentions goals. Maintaining good relationship with other staff members and helping them achieve their goals is also part of the job. Being a self starter is an excellent quality to have.


Still interested? Selling gym memberships to potential members is for a person with a strong sales background. Most businesses require making between 50 to 70 phone calls a day. You will be setting up appointments to tour the gym, it's facilities, and talking about it’s services and membership fees. By simply making the right number of calls on a consistent basis, you will be developing inquires into new memberships. You must also have through knowledge of the club history, background, philosophy, facilities , staff and policies. Sometimes there will be extended hours and some weekends that you’ll have to be working. You’ll need to attend and complete the FC Training courses. You’ll be required to attend and participate in sales meetings.


Trade show experience is an advantage. A trade show is where you meet guests and sell on the show floor. You’ll be demonstrating how the machines work and show some of the exercises on them. You will be sitting, standing, lifting, bending and stooping so you’ll have to be able to do all of the above without problem. Demonstrations at trade shows generate sales and that means more members at your gym.


So what kind of education requirements are there to become a Membership Sales Representative? A high school diploma is definitely required. Also a college degree, either Associate or Bachelor, is sometimes preferred. Some companies, for you to qualify, want you to successfully pass all testing requirements including gym tours, telephone inquiry, counselor planner audit, guest card audit, lead box/bowl program, referral program and capacitate outreach programs.


So if this is the type of sales job that you’re interested in, and you love exercise, then go for it!
