How Your iPhone Can Help You Get a Job

Posted by in Career Advice

After weeks of job hunting with no results, you’re ready to pull out all the stops and get some kind of work. You’ve sent out resumes, gone on interviews,  talked to HR people and recruiters—all with zip results. You’re really getting tired of living with your parents and driving the hand-me-down sedan they gave you for college. What to do?

Put your iphone to work for you.

Little did you know that there are dozens of iphone apps that can help you find a job. I know, you’re short on long green. But there are some really affordable apps you can get—at $2.99 or less. Here’s a sampling:

Apps for Networking. Many of these are free—like the apps for LinkedIn and Facebook. You’ll need to update and fill out your profile info on these sites. Then take a gander at the free app, How to use LinkedIn to Get a Job, which has a section on “Searching and Applying for Jobs.”

Apps on Job Listing. These include free apps for CareerBuilder and Monster.com. You can also find dozens of Craigslist apps that range from free to just under $2. Craigslist Mobile Pro lets you save and re-use your job searches.

Apps on Writing Resumes. Who knows, maybe you’ve been writing the wrong type of resume for the job you’re looking for. There are tons of iPhone resume apps to choose from. Other related apps include Dictionary.com and Dictionary and Thesaurus at just under $3. It could just be that your resume simply lacks the power words it needs to get a recruiter’s or HR manager’s attention.

Apps for Twitter. Check out the free app, Real-Time Jobs, which digs through Twitter for job listings. Just plug in the desired job title and geographic area and wait for the jobs to pop up.

Apps on Body Language. Maybe it’s what you’re doing (and not saying) that's costing you that job. Body Language for Dummies at just under $1 includes “Looking Closer at Non-verbal Gestures” and “Ten Ways to Spot Deception.” It also features a section on “Interviewing, Influencing and Playing Politics,” ideal for prepping for your interview. Another good app in this category is Body Talk at just under $2. It analyzes body movements and tells you if you're projecting a positive or negative image.

Apps on Interviewing. There are a number of really handy interviewing apps that will help you avoid many of the traps and landmines used to weed out candidates. One is Interview Questions and Answers at just under $2. It features 150 questions that cover everything from the standard to the more challenging queries, giving clues as to what the interviewer might be fishing for in an answer. There’s also the free app, Monster.com Interviews, which features handy hints on Q&As and even manages your job searches and interviews.

So load up your iPhone with these handy apps. Who knows, it might just give you the edge you need to land that plum job.
