No two snowflakes are alike, and neither are two bosses. Chances are good that you could see several different types of bosses in your entire career. Even though half of employees quit their jobs because of their supervisors, perhaps you don't need to do that in every instance. Learn how to work with your supervisor instead of thinking you have a bad boss by looking at these six archetypes.
1. The Coach
Coaches are the types of bosses who motivate employees to do their best by setting goals and challenging the team. Coaches trust everyone to play their roles to get the job done.
Work with this supervisor by giving him an honest assessment of your abilities and talking to him about your shortcomings. If you ever fall short, always learn from your mistakes to ensure you do better in the future. Coaches do not shift blame or make excuses for a bad performance, so you shouldn't do that, either.
2. The Vote-Getter
Vote-getting bosses seek out the opinions of the team. These types of bosses want to reach a consensus before moving forward with a plan because it helps foster collaboration.
When you work this this type of manager, give your honest opinion during strategy meetings, but also listen intently to what your teammates say. If you're not clear about something, ask questions until you develop an informed opinion.
3. The Example-Setter
Someone who leads by example sets the pace for the group. This person isn't afraid to get his hands dirty or work hard to accomplish a goal for the good of the team.
Be the best you can be for this boss, because this type of supervisor may come across as direct and demanding. Give your manager regular status updates about how your progress is coming along.
4. The Visionary
Visionaries are types of bosses who see goals into the future. Visionaries inspire the team and listen to everyone when trying to determine the right path to take when moving forward.
When you work with a visionary, jump right into a project and give it your all. Brainstorm ideas and give your supervisor several options for reaching the main goal.
5. The Empathetic Manager
An empathetic manager wants everyone on the team to get along. These types of bosses create connections with people while focusing on the emotional needs of the team to help get everyone through a stressful time.
Build a strong relationship with your teammates when you work for this kind of boss. Balance your emotions with a strong work ethic, and provide professional and honest feedback.
6. The C.O.
The commanding officer gives everyone clear instructions. He also expects you to fully comply with the plan once everyone agrees to the way forward, whether you agree with the plan or not.
Work with this supervisor by doing what he asks you to do. Get results beyond completing daily tasks, and present a range of options if you're not sure what your commanding officer wants from you.
Do you recognize any of these types of bosses? If so, try to understand how to work with them rather than throwing up your hands and quitting your job. You may learn some valuable skills in doing so.
