How to Get The Communication Job You Want

Posted by in Career Advice

Reaching your goal of working for a communications company or public relations organization can be attained in many different ways. There is no one way to do it. You only need look at the hundreds of books online or in your local library to see the different approaches the authors proclaim will help you get the job of your dreams. What most authors are espousing is merely information that comes from their research or experience or a little of both. As I have said over the years, “There are many roads to the mother lode.” In other words, there are multiple strategies or techniques that will help you to achieve your ultimate goal.

Some authors will encourage you to write out your job search plan on paper with timelines and milestones that should also be included. A left brained approach that will keep you organized and will insure that your efforts will be focused. By taking this detailed road when looking for your next job, you will no doubt be more fastidious with your time and efforts.

Other authors will encourage you to take a more right brained approach. This would require the use of more creative forms of job searching strategies that can draw on your natural skills or talents. One of these activities could be visualization, or imagining in your mind’s eye what it would be like to work in a job of your choosing.

It would entail seeing yourself as part of a company or organization that would allow you to be the kind of person you were meant to be. It could include driving into the parking lot, walking into the building and up the elevator to your office or cubicle. You could imagine yourself passing your fellow employees and manager and sitting down at your computer. You might see yourself gazing at your workspace that is decorated to take on your personality and preferences making it an ideal work environment. You could use your mind to hear the sounds of the people and the environment in which you find yourself. The telephone and happy conversations of people outside your workspace would add an auditory dimension to go with the pictures or scenarios you create in your mind.

Other experts often suggest a combination of these two approaches, where you use your left and more analytical brain, and your right or more creative brain to form a strategy that would be designed to take you to the career of your choosing.

So when it comes to reaching your goal of working for a communications company or publication relations organization, and whichever approach you choose, use something. It does no good to wander aimlessly without a solid strategy. It has been said if you don’t know where you are going you probably will never get there. In other words, frustration and disappointment await those who are not prepared. Good luck, the best is out there waiting for you!
