Hiring Leader: Ray Borg/Sr. Director of Global IT. Over 25 years of IT management experience.
Given all the news about the talent crunch, are you finding it more difficult to find qualified IT professionals?
It's always challenging to find the right talent and skill set to fit our environment and culture. There are a lot of fish in the sea, however, catching the ONE fish you seek and desire takes a lot of patience and skill.
What are your primary recruiting strategies? Do you work with recruiters, post jobs online, etc.
We post online to our website and other job-site postings. We do, on occasion, work with recruiters as well.
What is the hiring process?
Human resources usually screens resumes before presenting to the hiring manager. Hiring manager, then reviews and further screens out, phone screening those of interest. For those that pass the phone screen, they're brought in to meet with the manager, then if passing, meets with the contribution team and further with the IT management team and HR.
What should candidates know before they interview at Interwoven?
They should know something about our company, and how they'd fit in. They should look closely at the job responsibilities and requirements and be able to discuss how they can meet them and contribute.
What makes for an outstanding potential hire?
A good culture fit is extremely important. An ultimate team player and a flexible person. We're all part of a team. No superstars or egos. We collaborate on everything vs being individuals.
What are red flags you look for when reviewing resumes, doing interviews—what are some issues that thwart candidates?
Not being able to speak to bullets highlighted on their resume. For example: four years programming in C++. Well, I'd like to know what you've done with C++. Stating that I've watched someone over their shoulder work on a program won't satisfy our team.
What kind of non-IT skills do your IT team members need, if any?
Flexibility, teamwork, effective communication, the ability to document and provide examples of documentation. Adaptability and cooperation as well as collaboration.
How important is the cover letter in job queries " any tips or advice to job seekers on what to do or not to do.
Cover letters have their place. As an executive summary, one should simply highlight there skills in regards to the position being applied for and how they would fit.
Is the IT organization looking for certified skills, is that a must have or is there any other qualification that is a must have?
We do not look strictly for certification. Real life experience cannot be garnered in a lab or a classroom. Real experience enhancing the certification is a big plus.
Does the organization hire 'newbies' and invest in training and how well does that work, and if not, why not?
In some cases yes. We do train our people and have significant budgets to keep people on top of there game, position them for further growth and /or enhancing their skill sets.
What characteristics or personality traits do you want in a hire, and don't want?
WANTS: Ultimately, a team player, positive attitude, customer focused is very critical. One that toots his/her own horn, anti-communicative / social, combative or dis-organized will not do well.
What does your company offer IT specialists as an employer?
We have a great benefit and salary package. We pay fairly in comparison to the market and have been voted for one of the top 100 places to work for in Silicon Valley several years running.
