For some, getting a job at one of the big Tech companies like Facebook, Google, Apple or Myspace is like winning the golden ticket for programmers and developers. Even being considered for a job opening can be a difficult proposition. But some people are finding new ways to get the attention of big companies.
Take Nouman Saleem, for example. He created a simple website at myspacehire.me. His website is basically an open letter to Myspace. He created a new layout that makes a Myspace layout more streamlined and professional looking. Although it has a similar aesthetic as Facebook, it is clearly not a copy of the familiar layout. He even coded it and brags that it only took him an hour to do.
On his site, he asks Myspace to contact him to talk about what he can do to help the company update its look and better compete with the other social networking sites that are outpacing them. Although Myspace hasn't made any sort of press release about their struggles to change their image, Nouman has seen the need and attempted to answer it before they have figured out what their problem is. On his site he says this:
"So why the refresh? Well, it's obvious that you could use some fresh ideas. I rarely see a Myspace link in the footer of web sites (blogs, portfolios, and businesses alike). Usually just a "Follow me on twitter", or "I'm on Facebook". But where's the love for Myspace. Also the Press isn't good, and I don't have to tell you the statistics aren't any better.
Let's just chat about it
I have many fresh ideas, beyond just design, and to explain them would stretch this page far beyond 10,000px in height. I live just 40 min's from your corporate headquarters here in Southern California, and would love to have a chat in a local Starbucks (the coffee's on me).
It seems forward, I know, but maybe it is one way to get their attention. So did the ploy work? According to his site updates, he was invited to Myspace's office for an interview and was offered a job shortly thereafter. Sometimes going to great lengths to catch the attention of the company you want to work for can pay off.
What other ploys have you seen that have worked? Let me know in the comments.
