Gary Busey, you’ve done it again, offering another excellent example of how not
to get hired in Manhattan. Not even 5 minutes into the first boardroom meeting in the first episode of this season’s
Celebrity Apprentice and it’s apparent that Busey exists in a different reality than the rest of us. The Don was getting the down-low on the week’s challenge from Oscar winning actress and activist, Marlee Matlin, when suddenly a cell phone rang. “Whose phone is that?”Trump demanded as it continued to sing in the silence as everyone looked around dumbfounded. They couldn’t believe someone had made such an enormous error. Owning up as the culprit, Busey fielded the phone call. As any hiring manager would react on reflex Trump shouted out, “Gary, you’re fired!” Heads swiveled and jaws dropped to see if Busey’s reality had finally caught up with the one where everyone else existed. Fortunately for the Academy Award nominated actor Trump let it slide. Both teams laughed it off when Matlin mentioned she wasn’t bothered by the interruption. She’s deaf so she didn’t even hear it. Let Busey’s blunder be a lesson to you because in a real world interview you won’t be as lucky to have the hiring manager laugh off the offense. Taking a cell phone call in the midst of an interview will pretty much kill any chance you had to get hired. Unless you are a celebrity, don't expect to get away with murder. Your best bet is to just leave your phone in the car. But, if you have to have it on you, then you need to disable all notifications. Make sure all the sounds are silenced and the vibrate feature is turned off too. Something shaking in your pocket can make you appear jittery and unfocused. Reconsider your priorities if you’re expecting a call that is more important than the interview. Reschedule for an appointment time when you can give your undivided attention and make the best impression. Trump realizes that Busey is a creative genius who has sporadic focus so he can forgive him, this time a second offense would surely be no laughing matter. Are you looking for a job in Manhattan?
