Just because the holidays are about over, don’t give up your job search. This is a good time of year to find a job believe it or not. Whether you’re looking for a job in customer service or just something to tide you over, fill out those applications! Here’s some encouragement on why you should.
*Schedule your activities for your job search as if it were a job. Get up early and start looking. Don’t become depressed or put it off until another day. Keep your spirits up by being pro-active. Jobs don’t land in your lap, you have to look for them.
*A lot of employers are still hiring. Some companies that budget on an annual basis start to hire for them now. They need to meet their goals for the new year. Many interview now for positions in January. You want to make sure your application is one that is waiting to be looked over.
* If you are at a holiday social event, you can mention to people, friends and relatives that you are job hunting. Make sure to go to whatever event comes your way. Networking is one way to let people know you are actively looking. Someone may know someone who knows someone. Know what I mean? You never know who might be there that can help you. You can network discreetly without being obnoxious. Have your business card ready to hand out to whoever you’re talking to, discreetly.
* If you’ve been interviewed recently, send a holiday card or New Year’s card with your business card enclosed to the person who interviewed you. This will keep your name fresh in their minds and hopefully your application on the top of the pile.
* Check classifieds ads in your job area. Search the papers from November through December. Some employers are still searching for the perfect candidate and it could be you. If you see something, follow up right away. You could get lucky.
*Check daily on the online job boards, Nexxt is a good one, to see what’s new. Many employers post jobs online as opposed to using the classifieds. If there is a company you have your eye on the you’d like to work for, check out their website. Sometimes they post their job openings on their websites. Some companies hire during the holidays to start their new year with a fully staffed department. If you find something, follow it up immediately.
During this time of year, it’s also important to take some time for yourself and your family. Do relax and enjoy yourself but keep that job search going!
If you have other tips on job searching during this time of year, I’d be happy to hear of them. Input is always welcome!
