What do you think is the number one non-IT skill IT professionals need today? Effective communications outside of IT. What do you credit your career success to? A combination of hard work, good luck, and being willing to take huge leaps from my comfort zone. Mentors helped a lot. What are the top three skills a high-level IT manager needs today? Communication (build credibility for your role and yourself) Ability impact business results (focus your investments for biggest business impact) Ability to build and transform teams.(deal with outsourcing challenges while motivating and developing teams) What is the best career advice you've ever received? Give people the short answer to the question first. Own the outcome. Learn how to get on "the list" for top jobs. What's the top advice you'd give to a new IT staffer? Understand your users' view of IT and IT services, and what that view is based on. What would you advise someone looking to find the type of role you currently have? Deliver great results but know that hard work doesn't stand on its own. Make sure you are also managing what you are known for, and that the people who can influence your career know who you are, what you are doing and what you want. What is the one career decision you would change if you could? I would have taken an assignment in another country. If you had the choice to jump into any other job, tech or non-tech, what would it be? I've done it already! I was very fortunate to have the choice of getting another "big job" or doing something different. I very much enjoy working with business leaders and helping them get more business and personal "payoff" for their hard work.
