The idea of an upcoming holiday party at the office can seem like a stressful event for some, and others avoid going to avoid a potentially embarrassing situation. Don't skip the holiday party, even if the idea of hanging with your co-workers and managers gives you the chills. Choose to survive the holiday party while upholding professional etiquette – and you can still have a great time.

Dress Appropriately

Do not be the business professional that attends the holiday party looking odd and out of place. Women should avoid provocative clothing, and men should leave the grungy jeans at home. The rules of office etiquette recommend that professionals should dress business casual, even for a holiday party. However, If you have a festive holiday sweater or dress, you can don it with pride at the winter bash.

Network in the Room

Mingle with fellow employees and supervisors at the holiday party. If you are in attendance, members of your company expect you to network with other people there in good taste. Make sure to mind the rules of office etiquette, and avoid flirting or telling offensive jokes while you work the room. You never know who is in attendance at the holiday party, and you may be able to foster some new business connections that could be beneficial in the future.

Act Positive

Greet everyone with a warm smile and handshake to display your holiday spirit. Pay attention to your body language to ensure that you are not unconsciously sending out negative signals to others in the room. Stand tall, assume an open position and speak with a friendly tone to create a jovial atmosphere around you.

Bring Someone or Something Nice

If your boss allows you to bring a guest for a holiday party, bring your spouse or a close friend. Make sure that the person you invite is well-behaved, is dressed nicely and feels comfortable attending the event with you. If gifts are exchanged during the party, bring a simple, useful gift to show good sportsmanship and participate in the festivities.

Do Not Get Drunk

It is okay to have a cocktail or two, but avoid drinking alcohol until you get drunk. You may end up saying or doing inappropriate things at the holiday party that could make you a few enemies or cost you your job. If you have a low tolerance for alcohol, select virgin beverages as a precaution. It is easier to drive home safely after the holiday party with no traces of alcohol in your system.

Attending a holiday party can be a cringe-worthy event if you are unprepared for it. Dress your best, bring a positive attitude and give thanks to the party organizer after the event to leave a good impression.
