Australia Hiring U.S. Veterans

Posted by in Career Advice

It’s no secret that the U.S. Military is cutting back on enlistments and downsizing at virtually every level. For many, a military career offers job security, excellent benefits and free travel. But a downsized U.S. defense force may see many military jobs dry up.

As the Iraq War winds down, the Army expects to lose about 7,400 Soldiers. The Marine Corps eventually plans to cut about 16,000. And the Navy has already shrunk by more than 50,000, dropping another 3,000 Sailors by next fall. Only the Air Force expects to add people—but only a few hundred.

If you want to continue your career in the military, one option is Australia. They’re looking for individuals with current or former military service who can directly transfer their job skills to the Australian Defence Force.

Current job openings include special forces operatives, intelligence officers and submariners. The Royal Australian Navy’s submarine service needs sailors who are specialists in Cryptologic Systems and Electronic Warfare as well a Marine Technicians and Electronics Technicians. For the surface fleet, the RAN needs sailors (Leading Seaman and above) from the Marine Technician fields, and Leading Seaman Combat Systems Operators, preferably with anti-submarine/anti-surface controller qualification. The Australian Army currently has a number of openings for both Non-Commissioned and Commissioned Officers.

The U.S. State Department notes that the U.S. and Australia each recognize dual citizenship, so you won’t lose your U.S. citizenship if you serve in the ADF. Even U.S. security clearances are transferable to the Australian military.
