Advice on Building an Online Persona

Posted by in Career Advice

I recently purchased an intelligent phone. Yes, I know I'm far behind the curve. I often discussed how I didn't need a phone to do tons of things as long as it could make calls. What I've learned, however, is that phones are a great technology tool in social networking - particularly if you are searching for a job.

I have learned a great deal in how to use social networking to land a job. In the past, I wrote about Twitter and LinkedIn and building a great virtual persona. Though I loved the idea of social networking, I realize now that I wasn't utilizing it fully. For a while, I've wanted to create a more business-savvy online presence but I admittedlly didn't devote enough time to it.

After reading this article, I realized that many companies, regardless of what field you are in, are screening your online profiles as a type of 'virtual reference.'

So what can you do to keep your online reputation as clean as possible? First, I recommend setting up 'searches' of yourself and organizations with which you're associated. For example, if you're an alumni leader for your sorority and it says so on your resume make sure the sorority's reputation is on the up-and-up. If not, consider removing that aspect of your resume.

Secondly, check and re-check your privacy settings for all online profiles. I've noticed that many people who believe their profiles have a high security setting will post things on someone else's wall that does not appear employer-friendly. The mistake is assuming that since people can't view your profile publicly, they can't see anything. However, if someone else's profile is public knowledge, what you post will be also.

Thirdly, think first before starting a blog (even if it's not work-related). If your blog shows you as a negative or unproductive person and someone in the job world sees it, it will cast an unwanted light your way.

I hope that this generation of tech-equipped young people will learn what is appropriate to post online - before it's too late.

Do you have any experience with having a risky online presence? If so, let me know. Is there anything you'd like to read more about?
