What's it Like Working for Apple?

Posted by in Technology

So what's it like working for Apple Computer? According to recent anecdotal reports, there are a number of pros and cons in working for the pioneering company that keeps reinventing itself.

The pros are that the work is interesting, and you get to work with some intelligent people who are eager to help you learn the ropes. Helping customers is goal number 1. And there are many opportunities to become an expert in one area. The benefits are good, and since it's an international company, there's lots of diversity in the workforce.

The cons are not really cons but simply things that you'll need to get used to if you want to fit in with the Apple culture. Managers tend to be less people oriented and will usually work on projects and negotiate resources and priorities. Your direct manager will heavily influence your work style. Some managers will insulate you from the endless rules and procedures; others will put the accent on them. The small company "campus" feel is giving way in some departments to a big company ambiance. If you're really good and become indispensable, you'll notice an imbalance in your work-life schedule.

There's also Apple's notorious obsession for secrecy. Unplanned changes can be fast and furious with surprises forcing you to burn the midnight oil. The stress of dropping the ball in such emergencies can be pretty unnerving. There's also a paucity of professional development--except for a number of internal courses. And there seems to be a growing inequity in perks and facilities for certain business teams.
