These systems, employed by several companies, are designed to narrow the applicant pool down to a manageable number of qualified candidates. While this setup certainly increases efficiency, it is not without its flaws. Here are a few tips on getting your resume through the system and into the right hands.
Use Keywords
Using keywords throughout your resume essential if you hope to get past applicant tracking software. Most ATS systems scan a candidate's resume and gives it a grade based on the number of keywords and other relevant terms used in the document.
To maximize your results, compile a master list of keywords and phrases from the company's job posting, and gather words and phrases that are specific to your industry. Also, know that keywords are not always job-specific. Your education, geographical location and other personal identifiers might also help give your resume an edge.
Create a Short-Form Resume
Creating a short-form resume is a clever way to get past the applicant tracking software and get hiring managers to ask for more, says Rick Gillis, job search strategist, consultant and speaker. A short-form resume is free of graphics and special formatting, and it typically includes a header, a "seeking statement" and a short list of your major accomplishments, each with a quantifiable end result. If you can, include the company name within your statement. Many popular applicant tracking systems give applicants bonus points for using the company's name in the application, says Gillis.
The purpose of a short-form resume is to include the meatiest information right up front to make it past the screener, and then have the hiring manager contact you for more information. At that point, you can submit your complete, long-form resume and schedule an interview.
Network
Networking is still a huge piece of the job search puzzle. Utilizing your personal and professional network can help make up for some of the shortcomings of resume-filtering software. LinkedIn is great for generating referrals, because it provides a glimpse into a wider network than just your first-degree friends and co-workers. "So much of hiring today is about companies trying to bring in the best and brightest, rockstar talent, and in many cases, employees are incentivized for referring new hires," says Leela Srinivasan, chief marketing officer of Lever, a recruiting and ATS software solution company. So don't be shy about reaching out.

Using keywords strategically and creating a compelling short-form resume are two effective strategies for making it past the screener.
