The Top 5 Memorable Bosses in Movie History

Posted by in Career Advice

This past week, we took time out of our day to celebrate National Boss’s Day. Celebrated on October 16th, it was a day to say thank you to your boss and recognize what a difficult job they have.

According to the Hallmark website, 12 percent of all full-time workers are responsible for managing other employees. Although there are many people who don’t like their boss at all, Hallmark claims that having a good working relationship with your boss is one of the most important factors in overall workplace happiness.

The holiday began in 1962, and in honor of it’s 40th anniversary, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at the top 5 memorable bosses in the movies:

Bill Lumburgh (Office Space) - “Yeah, I’m going to need you to go ahead and …” I think we all love to laugh at this boss and what made him even funnier was how close he was to reality. We all know a boss like him, who makes insincere requests and tries to make up for it by introducing a lame policy like “Hawaiian Shirt Day.”

Vizzini (The Princess Bride) - Between his annoying voice and his constant use of the word “inconceivable,” Vizzini wouldn’t be an easy person to work for. I think we all remember his classic line “Do you want me to send you back where you were? Unemployed - in Greenland?”

Avery Tolar (The Firm) - When your boss tries to kill you, he’s officially a bad boss. At the beginning of the film, he appeared to be a great boss. It wasn’t until Tom Cruise began looking deeper that he realized how bad this boss was.

Jonah Jameson (Spiderman) - Who doesn’t love to hate Peter Parker’s pain-in-the-butt boss? Mr. Jameson is known for his loud voice and never-take-no-for-an-answer attitude.

Miranda Priestly (The Devil Wears Prada) - Meryl Streep did an amazing job portraying this fashion editor who loves to make her assistants work until they drop. By assigning them practically impossible tasks and demanding almost slavish devotion, Ms. Priestly was a boss I wouldn’t want to work for.

There are so many really memorable bosses in film. From the ones you love to the ones you love to hate, they have become a mainstay of cinema. This year, whether you love your boss or wish you worked somewhere else, take a moment to say “Thank You” to your boss.

What other movie bosses should be on this list? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
