The Real Power Of Walmart

The holiday season is almost over and with it, the crazy holiday shopping season. Even for those of us who are out of work and looking for jobs, it's hard to avoid the shopping madness. For Walmart, this year was just as crazy as the years past. On Black Friday this year, Walmart reported incidents of pepper spraying to get the best deals and even one shooting.


It's insane and honestly, it makes me question my faith in humanity. Many years ago, I worked at Walmart during the holiday season. I was hired as a night time stocker and I enjoyed the work and the extra cash. My shift ended at 7am, so we were all required to be out on the floor when the doors opened on Black Friday. I was amazed by the sheer craziness of the shoppers. It was cut-throat and brutal. That day I swore that I would never, ever shop on Black Friday again.


I've managed to keep my promise for the most part. Still, I can't understand how so many people would be willing to fight to save money on an Xbox 360 at Walmart.


In an effort to make sense of it all, I thought it would be fun to share this infographic showing the real power of Walmart. The company is huge and is the largest retailer in the world. The infographic was created by FrugalDad and is very well done.

As you can see, Walmart is close to being a new superpower. As the world's largest grocery store, retailer and employer they have an amazing reach. So, what would it be like if Walmart was a country?

The thing that I find the most interesting is that if Walmart were a country, it would be rife with income inequality. The CEO, Michael Duke, earns more per hour than their cashiers earn in a year. This is why I will always try to take my holiday dollars anywhere but there.
