The job search can seem like a daunting, never-ending task filled with rejections and disappointments. It doesn't have to be this way. Many job seekers make common, everyday mistakes that make the job search harder than it has to be. The most successful job seekers know how to use their time efficiently and effectively to get more interviews and more job offers.

Don't Just Search Online

Far too many job seekers restrict their job search to online career boards. Mass applying online to jobs that everyone else is also applying to is a big waste of time in most cases. Doing so can leave a bad impression on hiring managers, because oftentimes, your resume and cover letter are not tailored to the dozens of jobs you're applying to. You may also receive a lot more rejection, even if they're auto-generated, which can add to your frustration. Instead, dedicate less than half of your day to an online job search, and narrow down the choices to jobs that you are well-qualified for and that you truly enjoy.

Build Relationships

It really is about who you know: Referrals account for 30 to 50 percent of new hires, making them much more effective than any impersonal job board. Instead of sitting in front of a computer until your eyes go blank, dedicate time each day to utilize your personal network and build new relationships with hiring managers and organizations that are a good match for you. Even if they aren't actively seeking candidates, you still have the opportunity to make a good impression, which could lead to a new opportunity in the near future.

Translate Your Experience

For most hiring managers, choosing a candidate with lots of experience is most often the safest bet. But what if you have more talent than concrete experience? It is your responsibility to illustrate how can your abilities can benefit their organization. Don't expect hiring managers to connect your qualifications with the specific skill set they're seeking. Be prepared to explain the experience you do have, and be able to convince the employer that they need someone like you.

Don't Take Rejection Personally

Nearly every job search includes quite a bit of rejection. Unreturned phone calls, unanswered emails and unrequited interest can take their toll on your confidence after a while. Remember, the job search is not easy for anyone; it is a difficult and sometimes long process that in many ways, is out of your control. It is perfectly fine to feel sad and disappointed when the offer you want doesn't come through, but don't let it derail your efforts. Continue to manage your time, reach out to your contacts and follow-up. Your consistency and discipline are bound to pay off.
