Vault.com conducted a survey in which almost 60 percent of respondents admitted to having participated in some type of workplace relationship. Thirty-one percent of these people stated that they slept together on company property, and 6 percent were actually caught in the act. Despite the state of the economy and job market, 69 percent of respondents said they are still willing to take romantic risks at work.
The Pros
The fact that you spend a large chunk of your time at work makes maintaining an office romance pretty simple. You already see this person every day, and having to work side by side affords you the ability to know that individual on a personal level and get a good sense of the person's personality, level of intelligence and work ethic. You also already have a lot in common and plenty of conversation topics, because you're both on the same "team." You also have the advantage of dating someone who understands the pressure you're under and won't make a fuss when you're unavailable due to work obligations.
Having an office romance can also be fun and exciting, especially if you both decide to hide the relationship. Spending your days pretending you're not intimately involved incorporates a sense of playfulness and mystery into the relationship. It can positively affect your working relationship too, as you'll be more inclined to share ideas and collaborate effectively on projects together.
The Cons
An office romance is not without its fair share of drawbacks. The most obvious of these is that if things end badly, you still have to face this person every day and be forced to work together, no matter how awkward that may be. For some, this could lead to reduced performance, feelings of anxiety and increased absenteeism.
Another unfortunate side effect of an office romance is the potential for your secret to get out. All it takes is a quick flirty glance or giggle, and the office rumor mill begins churning. If you're not careful, your new relationship could become the subject of gossip before you've even had time to bond. It could also affect your job performance: you may find yourself taking more frequent breaks or finding ways to spend more time with that person during the workday, which could make other co-workers jealous or resentful.
