Retail workers looking for new jobs might want to start their search at companies hiring en masse. Here are 4 businesses that have openings for at least 1,000 associates each.
Wal-Mart has basic entry-level jobs at Wal-Mart stores to executive roles at the home office and everything in between like human resources, merchandising and store management. CEO Michael Duke announced last year that the company would create 500,000 jobs around the world over the next five years. You won’t be a perfect fit for all of the opening so distinguish what you want to do before you apply. Wal-Mart reps say to get the job "candidates should know and understand the company, and have a passion for it and the role for which they are applying. Their resume should be tailored for the specific position. Applicants should be prepared to show and quantify results, not just list duties performed, and be able to demonstrate their ability to solve problems."

AT&T is planning on adding employees in retail, broadband/U-verse call centers, U-verse network and other specialized tech growth areas such as digital life, application services, e-commerce and in various technology operations areas including architecture, network planning and engineering, and labs. A start in retail could launch a tech career if you’re ambitious. AT&T says they "look for candidates who are passionate about technology and innovation, with a keen eye on serving their communities and customers."

Verizon is opening the door to get on the sales floor with advancement into management or a future tech career. Right now they are looking for retail sales associates, IT staff, administrators, telecom engineers, as well as installation, maintenance, and repair technicians. Verizon was voted one of the best places to launch a career by BusinessWeek Magazine and is seeking enthusiastic individuals to build their team.

Target will hire leaders and team members in merchandising, web development for Target.com, engineers in technology services, product design and development, marketing, team leaders, guest service team members, pharmacists, nurse practitioners and medical assistants for its Target Pharmacy and Target Clinic locations. Thousands of these positions are new jobs that have been created as the company grows. Target HR reps are looking for individuals who can collaboratively lead teams and deliver results. To stand out they ask that you “give us examples of your ability to work in a team or group and take on leadership roles. Tell us how you can contribute to our fun and friendly atmosphere while providing great guest service."
