Your job search requires you to spend ample time marketing your skills and experience while working to impress potential employers. Many job seekers also face frustration when job offers are minimal. Even though you may be eager to embark on a new position, you must carefully consider opportunities that come your way. Unfortunately, some companies take advantage of candidates. Recognize these signs to ensure you are not on the path to misery.
Requiring Multiple Tests
While it is common for job seekers to take writing and editing tests, personality assessments and even typing tests, a company that requires you to spend a full day testing without a guarantee of a job interview may be wasting your time during the job search. To maximize your job hunt time, inquire about the company's hiring process prior to committing to a long day of testing.
Creating an Urgent Situation
When an employer interviews you, does not follow up for months and then requests an immediate interview, it is likely that you may be taken advantage of. Your time is valuable, and when employers impede this time during your job search with immediate requests, this serves as an indication that their actions as an employer may prompt similar requests on the actual job.
Rescheduling Interviews
Companies should be considerate of your time. While it is sometimes necessary to reschedule, an employer who delays the interview, reschedules at a moment's notice and disregards your scheduling challenges, is not taking your candidacy seriously. Show that you are willing to accommodate changes to a point during your job search, but also stress that you have other obligations to companies serious about hiring.
Rerunning the Job Advertisement
A company who interviews you and several other candidates should have ample choices to make a hiring decision. If employers alert you that they are still seeking applicants and plan to rerun the job advertisement, it is time to put your efforts toward other opportunities.
Sticking to the Script
A successful job interview should allow for you to ask questions in addition to responding to questions asked by the interviewer. Hiring managers who are adamant about sticking to the script and cut you off in mid-conversation may be just going through the motions. You do not have to tolerate this type of abuse during your job search. Seek out other opportunities where your input is valued and the hiring manager is serious about learning more about you.
You may run into situations that you should not tolerate when dealing with rude or disrespectful employers during your job search. Recognize the signs that a potential employer is wasting your time or taking advantage of you so you can maximize your time and focus your efforts on real opportunities that can further your career.
